      In her first chapter book Chig and the Second Spread, Swain tells the story of Minerva Kalpin, an eight-year-old nicknamed Chig because she is so tiny. The story is set in Indiana during the Depression; Chig is worried about attending the local one-room schoolhouse. Swain's other books include Chig and the Second Spread and I Wonder As I Wander. She lives in St. Paul, Minnesota. Artist David Geister has entertained audiences for years with his costumed portrayals of historic characters from the nineteenth century, and his artwork reflects his interest in history and dramatic storytelling.
